Abstract

Purpose: Although uremic pruritus is the most common and distressing symptom in hemodialysis (HD) patients, nursing interventions for meliorating the symptoms are rare and ineffective. This study was to figure out the effects of aroma massage in HD patients who were suffering from uremic pruritus.

Methods: 12 HD patients, who were in criteria "uremic pruritus", were enrolled. All the patients received the mineral oil massage on the arm with no fistula 3 times per week for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, the applied oil was wash-out. Then they were reapplied the aroma massage in the same way. "Itch Questionnaire in Uremic Pruritus" was used to investigate the demographic characteristics and pruritus and dialysis related information. A visual analogue scale (VAS) was also used to evaluate the intensity of itching sense in four situations; the worst, the best, at the current moments, and after mosquito bite.

Results: While the pruritus scores at ¡¯the worst¡¯ and at ¡¯the current moments¡¯ decreased significantly after the aroma massage, there was no significant change after the massage using mineral oil. In addition, there was no significant difference in the pruritus score between the aroma massage and the mineral oil massage at ¡¯the best¡¯ situation.

Conclusion:These findings indicate that the aroma massage is an effective nursing intervention in decreasing uremic pruritus in hemodialysis patients.
